I just read that the last porn theater in Baltimore, Maryland, the Apex theater, closed after 40 years of running porn movies. That’s sad as the grindhouse theater experience of watching porn is something that should be tried at least once. Sure, things are easy now and taken for granted. No longer do you have to travel to a cavernous theater smelling of disinfectant, pay at the box office and be careful in choosing your seat amongst a smattering of strangers while giant images of copulating couples flash on the screen and their moans echo through giant speakers.
Now you can simply sit in your boxers at your computer (at home and hopefully not at work, unless you’re the owner) and the world of tits, ass and sex comes to you, no fuss, no muss. The clock for the demise of the porn theaters began to run down in the late ’70s when Sony’s BetaMax tapes were released. And who were the first to put their movies on tape? Not the big studios, afraid of losing box office revenue. It was the pornographers, pioneers like Arthur Morowitz who founded the now-defunct Video Shack chain of retail stores in Manhattan, itself a victim of newer technology, the internet.

If you turn on your TV today, you just might see Simona Halep playing in the U.S. Open tennis tournament.
